Katie- CP 6

When Jaime and I went to Yasuko’s apartment for lunch on Sunday, Yasuko was the epitome of hospitable. We had at least brought her a fruit bowl from Publix and managed to fix her internet while we were there, which hopefully made up for it a bit! She made us delicious green tea, vegetables, rice balls, and dumplings, and shared a sesame spread that tasted like peanut butter with us. She was constantly moving back and forth between the living room and kitchen when we got there and insisting that we begin eating without her. When things settled down, we talked about her life in Japan, how she had met her husband, and the details about her stay in the US, and about Jaime’s and my futures in China and Japan. Yasuko seemed amazed that I was knowledgeable of and/or willing to accept many of the cultural differences she thought might be difficult for an American to get used to, such as following certain traditions within Japanese families and the tiny size of their apartments. We got to meet Yasuko’s daughter, son-in-law, and grandson, also. Her daughter had a lot of insight into the education system of the States and things about graduate school. The grandson, Kai, was absolutely adorable, of course. It was a very nice stay.
