Today’s tutoring session, we discussed vocabulary. Using a handout about computer software engineers (his major) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (great site about U.S. jobs & job outlook), he picked out words he was unfamiliar with. I would read each one in context and see if he could decode it. If he couldn’t, then I would explain it, sometimes using diagrams on the board.
Later, he picked a few computer engineering terms to explain to me (such as semantics web aka Web 3.0. I’m just getting used to 2.0!). I think we both enjoyed this; he had the opportunity to explain terms from his field, and I learned something new. We had time to discuss technology, and he excitedly discussed innovations in the field. I admire his efforts to discuss such conceptually difficult topics in English.
Ozan speaks slower than the normal speed of a native speaker, so increasing his fluency is one of my goals as a tutor.
This session went particularly well, and I think that, as time goes on, we’re able to understand each other better.
For next session, he said he wanted to work on speaking skills with a handout about “cool medical tech innovations”.
