DeRobbio Co1

Composition AE-LI

When I observed this class the teacher entered the room very welcoming and friendly, she used names and took the attendance. There was a new student that she introduced to the class and set up a time to meet and catch up with if he should need help. She tells the class that they will be taking a practice TOEFL next week so they need to practice there essay writing. The teacher introduced a new topic, the compare/contrast essay and explained all the parts. She emphasizes the importance of timed writing on the TOEFL and I felt that was good for the teacher to provide this rationale for the students. Before the writing began she outlined an essay including Intro, body, and conclusion and reviewed basic concepts such as transitions, and subordinators. Students were given 30 minutes to write their essay and the teacher read the three prompts out-loud and explained them to the class. They were; should public school be given online at home, do you prefer to be a member of a group or a leader, (opinion) what is the best ways to relieve stress. While the students were writing the teacher encouraged them and gave time increments stating where they should be at; 30,15,8,5 minutes through. She played music while the students were writing which I noted, and thought was very useful to omit the background noise. One thing I did notice with the class was that they addressed her as "teacher" which did not seem to bother her but seemed a little disrespectful to me.
