On July 11th, I met with my other conversation partner, Kukit Imvitaya, for the first time. We met up at the CIES lounge, where he introduced me to his life and aspirations. He is from Thailand, where he lives in Bangkok. He was born in a small town near Bangkok, and moved to the city after attending university. Kukit studied agricultural engineering and after he graduated, he worked for a firm where he helped design new strains of farm crops. He now feels ready to move on to something new, so he has come to America to get his MBA. I am not sure what he plans to do with this degree, yet.
We talked about some of our favorite pastimes. I told him that I really enjoy learning languages, photography and listening to and playing music. He asked me what instruments I could play, so I tried my best to explain the steel drums to him. I drew a little picture and promised I would play some steel music in the car the next time we went somewhere. He understood my attempts at ‘ukulele’ much better. He plays guitar himself (though he was very humble about it) and we joked about starting a band together. We also talked about Thai food, and if there were any good restaurants (in his opinion) in Tallahassee. He says the food at Siam Sushi (a strange name for a Thai place) is very good and authentic. We may eat there in the future, but for now, we have agreed to meet again on Friday, so I can take him to the Museum of Florida History (R.A. Gray Building). He has specified that he wants help with speaking, so I am planning different places to take him around town where we can talk about American, Floridian and Tallahassee-an culture.
