Jeff Dinert CO3

My final class observation was with Ah Young Kim, and was a speaking class at the level of group 2B. The class began with a a conversation about their assignment from the previous day where they took a field trip to a used car dealer and were supposed to ask question about the cars and bring back little reports about the cars each of them asked about and report the next day in class. I liked the real life application of the assignment, and that they went in groups of two, and that they were supposed to interact with someone outside of the educational sphere and try to communicate with them. Each group presented some information, about the model, the year, the mileage, the gas mileage the price, and all of these questions were provided by Ah Young Kim the day before, and explained, before she sent them off to the dealership. After the presentation she put a list of topics on the overhead and gave the class a chance to pick a topic of possible college level debates, but since no one jumped at the chance to choose she picked the topic of Do you think Peer Pressure is ultimately a good or bad thing for high school students? She then took the class to the writing lab and had them in groups research the definition of peer pressure, and possibly some of its outcomes. This was interesting for at this level every student researched at least to my observation in their own language and then presented the information in English. As they were researching she walked around to each student group of two, and asked them what they thought about the topic, and if they understood the topic, and then after about fifteen minutes toward the end of class she had the class discuss their findings and ask their opinions about peer pressure. It ended up being two groups for peer pressure, and two groups against it, but it appeared both groups learned something about our culture that is spoken of a great deal especially in reference to adolescents, and they had to explain themselves which seemed like a success. At this level Something to do to practice English, and learning something new to explain with more words than they are used to or possibly know is a solid game plan from my perspective and I appreciated Ah Young Kim for her time.
