Jeff Dinert TP8
This week of Thursday July 28, myself and Nakjoon met at the Northside Public library, and got a private tutor room, as my tutee heard Brian took his tuttee there and now Brian you have everyone wanting their own private tutor rooms and thanks. I'm just kidding. This week myself and Nakjoon were working on one of his essays from Michele's class about who he thought was the most successful man in his country, and why really he believed this. We also went back over some of the hints I gave him in his homework corrections that he sent me via email before turning them in. I did not correct them for him, but numbered each sentence, and said there was something possibly to look at in this sentence regarding grammar, meaning, vocabulary, or something needing to be revised, and he could correct if he wanted. That being said not every sentence needed correction, and the copy he sent me he actually used some of the complex sentences ideas of combing an idea and supporting with details in a longer sentence, or if he was going to use a transitional phrase to have it turn the idea in the sentence the other direction after a comma, and in the rest of the paragraph showing why with detail that the idea he had was contrary to something previously evident. He did a great job with his homework, but it is also appear ant, whether by lack of time, or just being tired from the effort it takes to write a lot, that unless encouraged to revise regularly, or motivated to do it, he will often miss some key points he can correct himself. This was essentially the matter of the lesson today, I planned to go through his paper and show how some ideas could be combined, other like we had discussed in earlier meetings could be expanded upon, how some things were unclear and needed to be developed further, but mostly how if he really wanted to say something, how should he say it. As usual in the beginning of the essay I gave him definite options and corrections, but as the essay went on and this was a long one three pages, he would have to tell me what he meant and correct it himself. I really like doing this because I can see with help and encouragement he puts more concentration on his writing, and less into the struggle of coming up with ideas. By that i mean his writing has improved as we have gone on. It might look the same but he is trying and succeeding in more complex skills and details, and I hope to get to help him in his Grad papers.
